A BEACH Volleyball legend helped Manly’s Volleyfest go retro ahead of a huge weekend of action.

 

American Randy Stoklos, 55, who was the first player to earn US$1 million in prize money plus scooped five Olympic Gold medals with partner Sinjin Smith, dropped by to support Manly Volleyfest.

He joined players from the Vollyeroos to promote Sideout Sunday, which sees crowds encouraged to don their best 1980s and 90s sports gear to watch Sunday’s action.

In addition to winning five Olympic gold medals, Stoklos also starred in 1990 volleyball flick Sideout and the basketball scene from Top Gun. Little surprise then, he has also been an inspiration for Volleyfest organisers.

Stokas, who lives in California, reckons the northern beaches can compete with the sand where he grew up playing.

“Manly Beach — you are very spoiled here. the conditions, the beach, the weather the ocean.it’s kind of unmatched,” he said.
