QUEEN OF THE BEACH STORY: UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII BEACH VOLLEYBALL
After No. 5 pair of Ari Homayun and Hannah Zalopany claimed the honor last week, it was time for the No. 3 pair of Rooks (Jr., Honolulu, O'ahu/Kaiser HS) and Schucht (So., Escondido, Calif./Serra HS) to get their due, going 5-0 on the week against all-ranked opposition to receive their first-ever Big West Beach Volleyball Pairs Team of the Week honors.
After four weeks, no other conference school has earned weekly honors this season.
The No. 3 Rainbow Wahine tandem earned all five of their wins against top-20 teams, including three top-10 programs in No. 2 Florida State, No. 9 Stetson and No. 10 Florida International. Four of the pair's victories came at the Stetson Beach Invitational over Spring Break in DeLand, Fla., where the duo recorded three straight-set victories.
Perfect in match play, the twosome helped UH to a 4-1 upset of the No. 2 Seminoles and contributed to wins versus No. 9 Stetson and No. 10 FIU. The duo also aided the Rainbow Wahine in stringing together now six-straight wins to improve to 9-5 on the season.
The Rainbow Wahine will be back in action on O'ahu this weekend, taking on the 2016 Outrigger Beach Volleyball Challenge with a first-day pairs tournament at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex on Friday, April 1, followed by meetings with Arizona State and UCLA on Queen's Beach on Saturday, April 2.
